The Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease Connection

 

Even though cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death for people with type 2 diabetes, many people don’t know about the connection between these two diseases.  

According to the American Heart Association, approximately 21 million Americans live with diabetes and about 90 to 95 percent currently have type 2 diabetes. It develops when the body doesn’t make enough of a hormone called insulin or doesn’t efficiently use the insulin it does make.  It appears most often in middle-aged adults; however, it has been occurring in adolescents and young adults at an alarming rate.
